Thanks to a Fulbright Scholarship, I started the PhD in Mathematics Education in 2006. I am a former senior secondary mathematics teacher and worked at the University of Cape Town's Schools Development Unit (SDU) located in the School of Education. I taught in the Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE) and worked extensively in designing and implementing Professional Development Programs for inservice teachers, focused on improving mathematics performance in low-achieving schools. I was the Project Manager for the Learner Assessment Study for all the grade 3 and 6 learners in the Western Cape Education Department. I am the co-author of the Effective Teaching Mathematics Textbook Series and Teaching Resources for grades 8 - 12.
My research interest is in all issues relating to assessment and achievement in mathematics with a focus on how students in impoverished communities learn mathematics and develop mathematically. In particular, I aim to track a cohort of learners from grade 3 to grade 9 using testing and other means to measure their mathematical competence.
